Gemstones & Minerals

Crystals are unique, they need to be seen in the flesh & handled to be fully appreciated, as it is the intuitive feeling that is allured by the individual crystal. So it's a good idea to get over to Ironbridge and examine just what beauties we really have in stock!!

Crystal Labyrinth specialises in gemstones from every continent of the earth & beyond, since we also stock such rarities as moldavite, which is meteoric in origin.

Information on one of the more well known gemstones :-

Amethyst

Amethyst can occur as crystals that are six sided on either end. It also forms as drusy which are crystalline crusts covering the host rock. It is found inside geodes and in alluvial deposits all around the world and occurs in both crystalline or massive forms. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family.

With a few parts million of iron and manganese and with a short dose of gamma radiation the Quartz becomes "Amethyst" ~ The properties of which are strikingly different!!

It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Top quality amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. Its purple color made it a stone of royalty for many thousands of years.

Amethyst Mythology: The name of amethyst is derived from Greece & means 'non-inebriated' (amethustos). It's sobre, clearing effect was already known in antiquity and the crystal itself was therefore highly prized. In the Middle Ages, Konrad von Megenberg quite aptly defined the amethyst as a mineral that 'makes a person better, disperses bad thoughts, brings good commomsense & makes one mild and gentle'. Hildegard von Bingen left us information on its healing effects on skin diseases and swellings, and in Arabic countries we know that amethyst was put under the pillow to prevent nightmares.

Healing: This gem encourages constant spiritual wakefulness, a sense of spirituality & insight into the reality of the spirit. It imbues a sense of justice & provokes honesty and uprightness. In meditation it helps quieten the mind and is an aid to finding deep inner peace and discovering the wisdom residing within ourselves. It will help in sadness & grief and lend support in coming to terms with loss. By putting amethyst under the pillow it will be noticed that it will strongly stimulate dreaming until all undigested impressions have been clarified. After a few days however, sleep will suddenly become calmer, deeper and more refreshing. Amethyst encourages sobriety & awareness, it helps us face all experiences & encourages consciously dealing with perception, thus can also help addictive behaviour.

Application: The amethyst should be worn for a long period of time, either as a chain or pendant next to the body,or contemplaated steadily during regular meditations. Amethyst pieces can be stood up around the room where their radiation will be so strong that it will transforn the entire climate (spiritual) of the room. The gem can be laid on the body directly in the general area of the relevant organ, and can also be taken as a gem elixir.

Ametrine unites amethyst and citrine colour zones. It arises through hydrothermal formations out of iron-containing silicic acid solutions
